After a big campaign led by British Deaf Association, BSL was finally recognised by the UK government as an official minority language on 18th March 2003. This has led to increased funding for the needs of the communication of people who are Deaf.

The British Deaf Association is still campaigning for a legal status for BSL as equal as Welsh and Scot Gaelic have their own legal status to promote and protect their languages.
